How sturdy are the shelves? And how big are the compartments?
Very sturdy, I have books and clothes all packed in and it holds great! I would say about 10 inch high x 1 foot wide for each compartment
Would this hang well on wire shelving instead of a rod?
Yes it does. That's how I have mine hanging. works great. Just make sure your wire shelf is well anchored.
What is the total length?
The extended shelves are 44 inches long but add another 3 inches for the hanger clearance.
Are the hooks reversible? Meaning, can you twist them around to point to either the front or back of the unit?
Yes I just tried it. You can twist them either way. Just the hooks.
Could this be packed with clothes and then collapse into a suitcase?
You could but I'm not sure how flat you could get it
